A cheerful heart is good medicine!
Scripture teaches us that the attitude of our hearts impacts our health. The author of Proverbs writes, “A cheerful heart is good medicine…” 17:22 (NIV).
When we laugh our bodies produce chemicals that are good for us, help us feel better, and trigger relaxing, healing qualities. The biblical author wrote long before the existence and affects of these chemicals were known. He must have observed that people who were cheerful seemed healthier. Part of the story of inspiration of Scripture is God helping us interpret what he is revealing all around us.
A cheerful heart is also part of a hopeful person’s attitude. Some of the wonderful positive perspectives of the biblical accounts and prophesy include that Good ultimately wins over evil and Truth rises to the top. It is encouraging to remember that what is good and true really is honored.
Prayer and worship help cheer our hearts. When we encounter God through honest and thankful communication our attitudes are formed in humble and trusting ways that help displace much of the anxiety of life.
And guess what else helps with a cheerful heart? Exercise. Something as seemingly minor as a twenty minute walk can refresh your body and help your attitude. Too busy? Try praying and worshiping while you walk. Or maybe take a walk with friends who help you laugh. Combining activities may just multiply the impact.
Enjoy the good medicine of a cheerful heart. God loves you.
